To The End – Mt. Hood to Cascade Locks

(This blog entry is from my Patreon blog, where you can see my Adventure Blog entries before anywhere else while supporting my trade and craft. Along with early blog posts, Patreon backers also receive access to trail comics, drawings, and videos.) Originally published on October 8th   August 15th – Wednesday – 5.1 miles hiked – 398 total – m. 2102 My last morning in this awesome hotel started with a hangover. Dammit. Just a light one, however, and it would have been worse had I not noticed that the cider I was drinking the night before was 8 months expired. I wondered why it tasted skunky. Bones didn’t sleep well, like the…

The Charred Wasteland of my Heart – Oregon, Elk Lake to Olallie Lake Resort

(This blog entry is from my Patreon blog, where you can see my Adventure Blog entries before anywhere else while supporting my trade and craft. Originally posted: August 14th, 2018   August 4th – Saturday -14.3 hiked – 263 total – m. 1969.5 Crap, this is my last lined page for over 100 miles. I guess after this I type my journals. So we jumped up to Oregon, where we’re hiking the last 200 miles of the state to arrive just in time for Trail Days. First thing I noticed about the trail here is how smooth…

Trip Report – The Oregon Coast Trail

(This blog entry is from my Patreon blog, where you can see my Adventure Blog entries before anywhere else while supporting my trade and craft. Along with early blog posts, Patreon backers also receive access to trail comics, drawings, and videos.) 6/30/2018 I’m currently in Portland, OR, hanging out at my old roommate’s place. For the last couple of years, the three of us (me, Evan, and her) traditionally went to the coast for a few days at the end of June. We missed out last year while we were hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. And this year money has been tight. So instead of getting a pricey hotel room and sitting on…

Trip Report: The Olympic National Park

(This blog entry is from my Patreon blog, where you can see my Adventure Blog entries before anywhere else while supporting my trade and craft. Along with early blog posts, Patreon backers also receive access to trail comics, drawings, and videos.) April 23, 2018 Evan and I went out to the Olympics last week for a brief stay in a cabin with friends and then an overnight in the Enchanted Valley. Neither of us had been to the Olympic Peninsula before, and this would be our first overnight of the year. A good chance to try out our new gear!  We looked at the various trails near the cabin on Lake Quinault but…

Coming to a Close + Where I’m Going From Here

(This blog entry is from my Patreon blog, where you can see my PCT blog entries before anywhere else, as well as support me financially on this grand adventure. Along with early blog posts, Patreon backers also receive access to trail comics, drawings, and videos.) Seeing as most of you readers are actual human beings (I hope?), living the lives of actual human beings (I’m not so sure about that one), you have all faced failure at some point in your life (or are you a statistical anomaly?). Failed math test, failed date, or failed to meet someone’s expectations of you. Call it disappointment, defeat, or losing. Whatever. It sucks. What sucks…

    Making Friends

Day 3 I awoke with a sore throat. What the heck? Maybe it was all the huffing and puffing I did up the hill yesterday, or maybe it was the mountain air. Maybe it was the fact that I finally spent more than 3 minutes talking to other people? The night before was full of jokes and laughing, and was a pretty good time. We hiked out of Mt. Laguna, through sand and rock. The morning was already warm, and my legs were itchy with horsefly bites. Sand had gotten onto my thighs where I had smeared anti-chaff cream… which kind of defeated the purpose in the end. Despite the…

    The Hour of The Lizard

Day one.   My alarm startled me awake and I frantically turned it off so not to wake Sleuth or anyone else. 5am. Scout and Frodo have a very strict schedule for us hikers, and I had 30 minutes to get my shit together and be ready for breakfast. Except when I finally got down there to eat, I didn’t have an appetite. I stared at my plate of oats, fruit, and muffin and felt more like throwing up than eating. Where did that ferocious need to consume that I had yesterday go? I didn’t even want the coffee (in that defense it wasn’t very good coffee. Sorry guys I’m…
